Without subordinate interests come afterwards.Such is the general situation in whichthe ethnographer of to-day finds thenearly two millions of people calledNorwegians. THE NORSE.—NOR WEGIANS. 63 or bulge, of a bladder-like bottle, witha bent neck reaching from latitude 64°N. to the Varanger Fjord, which entersthe top of the neck as if it would fill thewhole with sea water. The rivers areshort and unimportant, running downquickly to the ocean, like those of West-ern North America. But there is nolack of water. The air is humid andgiven to precipitation. The rainfallvaries very greatly in different parts ofthe country and at different seasons.Along the coast, and particularly in theneighborhood of Sogne Fjord, the rain-fall is as much as seventy-seven inchesper annum. From this it sinks away,through various degrees, until in thesoutheast of Finmark it is no more thantwelve inches during the year. On thewhole, the average precipitation is aboutforty inches.
