Summary
[edit]DescriptionRidgewell Airfield - geograph.org.uk - 246871.jpg |
English: Ridgewell Airfield. This is Ridgewell Airfield, showing the remains of one of the WW2 runways and the glider winch for launching the aircraft that use the aerodrome today. RAF Ridgewell was operational from 1942 until the end of the war. It was intended as a USAAF 8th Air Force station but no squadrons were available to use the field on its completion. The RAF operated Sterling heavy bombers until mid 1943 when the USAAF and their B17s took up residence. There is another shot of the airfield remains at 246888. To go to the next field in an alphabetical tour of Essex WW2 airfields click on 229376. Much information as gleaned from Graham Smiths book Essex Airfields In The Second World War.
