The space beneath these galleries is *occupied on the north side by the Senate Lobby (p. y2>) \ on theother three sides by cloak-rooms for the Senators. Thefloor area is thus diminished to 84 by 51 ft. The height ofceiling is 36 ft. The walls are of marble and are paneledby pilasters grouped in pairs. The doors, desks and chairsare of mahogany. Note especially the high-backed andrichly carved chair of the President of the Senate, presentedoriginally to Vice-President Hobart. The ceiling is flat andconstructed of iron girders inclosing broad panels of stainedglass, the designs symbolizing: War, Peace, Union, Progressand the various Arts, Sciences and Industries. History. In this chamber are ratified all treaties made bythe United States with foreign powers. Here, in March,1868, began the famous impeachment trial of President John-son, culminating, on May 16th, with the Presidents acquittal.It was in the Senate Chamber that the funeral of ChiefJustice Chase took place, May 12th, 1873; and here also thefuneral ceremonies of Charles Sumner, March 13th, 1874. The visitor should note that there are no portraits, paint-ings or mural frescoes in the Senate Chamber. This is inaccordance with a unanimous resolve passed, Feb. 15th, 1884,to the effect that no paintings or portraits be placed uponthe walls of the Senate Chamber.
