Everybody knows that Portugalhas troubles at home nowadays and would behelpless if provoked into an African embrogliowith Germany. It would be very easy toprovide a boundary dispute or imagine theneed of protection for some German traderor miner in Portuguese territory—to beended by annexing Angola and thus linkingup the main German colonies on the WestCoast. But suppose England should inter-fere just as Germany has interfered with theFrench plans in Morocco? Very well; justacross the continent is Portuguese EastAfrica—bordering on a British colony. Pos-sibly an agreement might be reached wherebyGermany would keep her hands off if some-thing should happen over there that wouldlead to the absorption of Portuguese EastAfrica by British South Africa.
