The Hemis Tsechu festival, celebrated at the Hemis Gompa in Ladakh, is a celebration of Guru Padmasambhava and his multiple manifestations.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Masked lamas are seen in the foreground depicting various anecdotes in the life of Guru Padmasambhava, performing a coordinated dance to become raconteurs of age-old stories to the people of today. The multi-coloured costumes and expressive masks that the lamas don are an oasis of human expression against the stark, meditative landscape of Ladakh. In the pleasant chill of the gompa air, bells and drums resound under the blue summer sky, and tens of feet thump against the stone, bringing to life the beating heart of the land. The stories that reverberate within the monastery walls teach of the triumph of good over evil. Times change, but some things transcend temporal erasure. Thousands of visitors from all over the world visit this spectacle of colour, sound, and spirituality. Watching and learning from the performing lamas are people of all ethnicities and walks of life, seen in the background keenly observing every moment and many scrambling to capture even a single frame of the ethereal wrapped in the corporeal. The Hemis Tsechu festival is a mesmerizing experience for every spectator; it binds all humans and human truths into one indivisible whole.
