Description |
English: Reverend Maurice Suckling, (1676 - 1730), grandfather of Lord Nelson A simple and direct half-length portrait of Nelson’s maternal grandfather, to right in clerical dress and a white dress wig, and looking directly ahead to meet the gaze of the viewer. It is one of a pair with BHC3043, a portrait of the sitter's wife Anne. Suckling was baptised in May 1676 and became rector of Barsham, Suffolk, and a prebendary of Westminster. His second son was Captain Maurice Suckling (see BHC3045), through whose influence Nelson (son of Catherine Suckling, the rector's daughter, and the Revd Edmund Nelson) entered the Navy in 1771. This painting is inscribed ‘Maurice Suckling D D Born 1675 Died 1730’, and is a later copy of a portrait made posthumously in 1775. |
