English: Portrait of Cardinal Henry of Portugal (c. 1750). The background has symbolic references to Cardinal Henry's brief reign as King of Portugal and subsequent loss of independence due to the inexistence of heirs: the statue of Lusitania on the background has died thistles growing around the pedestal, its spear is broken, and its head is out of frame; on the table sit a book with the title Portug. Regnum, a crown, and a rabbit. Painted by Francisco Vieira Lusitano, c. 1750.
