THE CONSTITUTION plebeian encroachment had been usurped by the despised andhated class. After the mutiny at Capua (342 B.C.) a measurewas carried throwing open both consulships to the plebeians.The praetorship, resigned to the patricians as a consolation fortheir defeat in the crisis of the constitutional struggle, went thesame way, and by the Ogulnian I^aw (300 B.C.), which openedthe colleges of priests and augurs to the plebeians, they weredriven from their last refuge, the management of the Statereligion.
