or if this part ofthe task had been neglected a vantage-ground would havebeen left to the Romans, who had already formed friendlyrelations with some of the northern tribes, and who were knownto be meditating an attack on Spain. Eleven thousand troopswere left under the command of Hanno to secure the recentconquest, and the same number, selected from the Spanishveterans, were discharged from service and sent with richpresents to their homes. In acting thus Hannibal showedhimself both politic and generous, for he thereby increased thenumber of his friends in Spain and confirmed the loyalty of thoseremaining with him, who might hope to end their labours withequal honour and profit. By these withdrawals and by monthsof severe fighting his forces were reduced to fifty thousandinfantry and nine thousand horse. But they were all pickedmen and devoted to their great leader, and the whole armywas high in heart and hope when Hannibal passed the Pyreneesand pursued his march toward the Rhone.206
