On his return march he fell in with a tumultuaryforce which had been raised by Centenius, a brave centurion,for the defence of lyucania, where Gracchus, the proconsul,had recently been betrayed into an ambush and his armydispersed. Centenius was rash enough to measure himselfwith the victor of Cannae, and he paid for his folly with hisown life and the loss of his whole army, amounting, it wassaid, to sixteen thousand men.
