It was thought expedient to appoint a dictator, andthe choice fell on the aged Papirius Cursor (309 B.C.). Someinteresting details are mentioned by I^ivy in his description ofthis campaign, giving a touch of romance to the story of thesewarlike mountaineers, who were doomed by a strange fateto waste all their splendid energies in a hopeless cause.
