e Missionsand Sunday-school work are unified under one committee. The New Era Movement has resulted in not only increasing thesalaries of our missionaries but in bringing several Home Missionchurches to self-support. During the past year, the first serious attempt to do a realChurch Extension work in the city of Omaha has been successful.Nearly $3,000 has been secured for this purpose. The propertiesof two or three of our missions have been improved and a chapelhas been provided for one of our new missions in a growing sec-tion of the city. Our Presbyterial Committees have been making very carefulsurveys of the fields ministered to by our mission churches in ordert determine whether there is overlapping, and if so how it may beremedied. Emphasis has also been placed upon the importance ofproviding efficient ministers for our churches in the open country.The outlook for the future seems exceedingly bright, as the Synodis determined that our missionaries shall receive adequate salaries.

IV. The Year in Review The year just passed has combined to an unusual degreetragedy, opportunity and achievement. It was not alone the GreatWar that made it a year of tragedy, though the Board of Home Mis-sions shared with all other Christian causes that most colossal bur-den. Two serious disasters last fall on Home Mission fields would nothave passed by with such scant notice had not the country been atthat time so near its surfeit of horrors. Such was the state ofpublic mind during the last months of the war that fire and earth-quake seemed among the lesser evils. First in Septenilber came the Minnesota forest fire, apparentlyof incendiary origin, started it was thought for the purpose ofchecking the work on the great Iron Range. It was kindled in manyplaces almost simultaneously along the route of a north and southhighway out of Duluth. One must have lived in the woods to knowwhat a forest fire means.
