list.)The first visit made to Siam by any representative of our Church was forthe same purpose which had already brought other missionaries there—namely, to find access to the Chinese. In 1838, Rev. R. W. Orr spent amonth in Bangkok, and recommended to our Board this country as a fieldof effort, not only for the Chinese, but for the Siamese themselves. TheRev. W. P. Buell was sent to Bangkok in 1840. Remaining until 1844, anddoing good foundation work, he was compelled to leave the field, and itwas not until 1847 that the next missionaries reached Siam. From that timeuntil the present, continuous work has been maintained. SOUTH SIAM—BANGKOK 313 be induced to rent or sell any house to the missionaries. The first convertwas the Chinese teacher, Qua-Kieng, who was baptized in 1844 and died inthe faith in 1859. A good record is also given of the first native Siamese con-verted in 1859. Banc/kok was for many years the only center of missionary work. In1857 the mission was i)ermanently established in the section of the cityknown as Suinray. A school for boys was opened in 1852 which, in 1889, wasmerged into the Boys Christian Ilif/lt School. The Harriet House Schoolfor Girls was begun in 1874. Medical work was the chief means of gainingfavor. American missionary physicians have always been the trusted ad-visers of the king in introducing modern medical methods. In 1869 a print-ing press was sent out.
