A heavy counterweight moimted on a steel lever was used tohold the car body against the knife edges of the lever systemat all times, so that the dynamometer equipment (which readin one direction only) could be used for making measurementswith the car going in either direction. In order to absorb the vibrations between the car body andthe flat car upon which it rolled, a pair of air brake cylinderswas mounted on the car body floor, one just forward and theother just back of the center of the car, the arrangement beingsuch that their pistons pressed against the trolley post whichwas a part of the flat car. The cylinders were filled with oil, andwere connected by means of a by-pass containing a valveso that the rate of flow of oil between the cylinders couldbe regulated, and the vibration absorbed to any desiredextent. 494 ELECTRIC RAILWAY TEST COMMISSION
