ty and Baltimore City High School Pupils Music was taught in the high schools of all counties, exceptCalvert, Cecil, Kent and Somerset. In 10 of the 18 countiesoffering music, from 50 to 83 per cent of the pupils had instruc-tion in music in 1940, while at the other extreme in one countyonly 18 per cent enrolled in the last four years of high schoolelected music courses. (See Table 70 and Table XXXIII, pages370-375.) Instrumental and choral music involving participation in en-semble groups, orchestras, bands or glee clubs was possible in 60white high schools of 19 counties. There were 43 schools in 15counties which had orchestras made up of 506 boys and 393 girls.In eight of the county high schools having orchestras 201 boysand 41 girls played in bands. Two schools without orchestras hadbands with a membership of 30 boys and 5 girls. In 58 schoolsin 17 counties the glee clubs attracted 1,036 boys and 2,230 girls.(See Table 76.) County High School Orchestras, Bands and Glee Clubs 117 There were 87 county high school .students who were membersof the Maryland All High School Orchestra which played forthe 13th time for the State Teachers Association in October, 1939.They came from 26 high schools in 11 counties. Forty-six playedstring instruments, 15 woodwind, 24 brass, one handled the per-cussion instruments, and one played the piano. There were 65members of the orchestra from Baltimore City.
