| Description | Two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District wing dam buoys from the Sacramento River near Sacramento, Calif., shown March 21, 2012, show varying degrees of wear and tear. The district maintains 54 wing dam buoys on the Sacramento River between its confluences with the Feather River to the north and the American River to the south, making sure they’re in working order and properly placed. The buoys warn boaters of underwater structures called wing dams, which slow river bank erosion while helping the river naturally dredge itself. (U.S. Army photo by Todd Plain/Released) |
