Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Rental Assistance Corporation building, 470 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. A work of architect T. W. Golding, here we see the Art Deco style exemplified nicely in a façade where four horizontal rows of windows are interspersed by vertical strips of brick fashioned into ersatz pilaster strips, complete with stylized capitals adorning the parapet that crowns the flat roofline, with decorative masonry work adorning the spandrels in between. The fluting framing the twin entrances is a further example of the stylized Classical forms that typify the aesthetic. Erected in 1930, the building stood at the northern end of Buffalo's so-called "Film Row", which in the early 20th century extended along Franklin Street between the Theater District and Allentown. Today remain eight former film exchange buildings: receiving and distribution centers where film reels sourced from the main studio would be screened for local theater owners and offered for rent, and where advertising posters and other promotional material was made available to movie houses. 470 Franklin was owned by Warner Brothers, and handled distribution in a region that stretched from Cleveland to Syracuse and Binghamton. Harry Hoffman & Sons, a local printing firm, was a secondary tenant from the late 1940s through 1957. Warner Brothers sold the building in 1964, and it now serves as the offices of the Rental Assistance Corporation, managing firm for a portfolio of affordable apartments around the city including several in the upper floors of this building.
