Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Renovation Center, 567 Hertel Avenue at St. Florian Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. With its broad gabled parapet crowning the main façade, its row of pedimented dormer windows lining the sloping sides of the roof about halfway between ridge and eave, and the ubiquitous motif of round arches, the building is immediately identifiable as the work of Polish-born, East Side of Buffalo-based architect Władysław Zawadzki. The building was conceived as the original home of St. Florian Roman Catholic Church, the second chronologically and smaller of the two that served the Polish-American enclave in Northwest Buffalo, the city's second-largest in population; it was founded in 1917 and served a population that had been attracted to this northern portion of the enclave by available jobs in World War I-related industries such as the Curtiss airplane factory on Elmwood Avenue. The Zawadzki-designed building, which originally housed both church and school, was always meant to be temporary, but an unexpected slowing in the population growth of the parish meant it was not until 1964 when their larger, permanent house of worship was dedicated. The earlier building remained in use as a school until the 1980s. The complex is now home to the nondenominational Renovation Church, who purchased it in 2008; the former school building is now used as an event center.
