Collectie NAi, STAA t22.1-176
Eeuwenlang gaan Nederlandse architecten naar Rome en Parijs om de hoogtepunten van de klassieke Europese architectuur te bestuderen. Wie ‘De doos van Staal’ opent, komt een totaal andere wereld tegen. Reisschetsen van Spanje, Griekenland, Marokko, Tunesië, Egypte, Palestina en Syrië passeren de revue. Deze doos staat symbool voor de relativering van de westerse architectuurtraditie. Na eeuwen van cultuurimperialisme zijn we niet meer in Afrika of Azië om onze cultuur over te brengen, maar om inspiratie op te doen. Staals impressies tonen een onbevangen nieuwsgierigheid naar de architectuur, het landschap en de mensen van deze streken.

Dutch architects have for centuries been going to Rome and Paris to study the highlights of classical European architecture, but anyone who opens ‘Staal’s Box’ will encounter a totally different world. Travel sketches from Spain, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine and Syria pass in review. This box stands as a symbol for the qualification of the Western architectural tradition. After centuries of cultural imperialism, we are no longer in Africa or Asia to transplant our culture, but to gain inspiration. Staal’s impressions reveal an open-minded curiosity about the architecture, the landscape and the people from these regions.
