Summary[edit]
Description |
English: Arrival of "Regulus Missile Mail" at Naval Auxiliary Air Station Mayport, Florida (USA), 8 June 1959. The submarine USS Barbero (SSG-317) had launched a SSM-N-8 Regulus cruise missle shortly before noon circa 160 km off the coast which arrived at Mayport 22 minutes later. While the submarine was docked at Norfolk, Virginia (USA), U.S. Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield had helped place two blue and red metal containers, holding 3,000 letters, inside the missile prior to the flight. The 3,000 letters were identical letters from the Postmaster General that were addressed to U.S. President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, cabinet members and top federal officials, all members of congress, Supreme Court justices, U.S. governors, postmasters generals from around the world and the officers and crew of the Barbero. The flight was a public relations demonstration of precision guided missle flights during the Cold War. |
