English: Regrading Third Avenue, 1907 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: Seattle's hills are steep, but they used to be steeper. During various regrading projects, the city tried to make the streets and avenues more level. Some areas were raised and some were lowered. Nearby buildings were raised or lowered too. Others were torn down or moved away.
This 1907 photo shows the regrading of Third Avenue. The street in this area has been lowered, leaving the original door of the Telephone Building (right) up in the air. The two buildings next door are jacked up on crib piles. These supports will be removed as the buildings are lowered to the new street level.
