first great battle. On11th July, 1916, fighting his gun to the last, he had hisleg shattered by a shell. Weakened by loss of blood hesank under chloroform in hospital during the night. 2nd Lieut. Eric Tomlinson Martin. Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry. 2nd Lieut. Martin, Indents Department. Joined one ofthe battalions of the London Regiment at the outbreakof war. He went through the usual training, and wasthen granted a Commission in the Duke of CornwallsLight Infantry. After a further period of training, mainlyat Wareham, he was attached for Active Service to the8th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. In the attack on Le Sars (south-west of Eapaume),on the morning of October 1st, 1916, he was about tolead his platoon into action when he was killed by ashell. His Colonel wrote that he was very popular inthe Battalion, and showed great promise. You will beglad to know that, had he lived, he would undoubtedlyhave quickly earned promotion.
