Cunningham was in a great hurry to obtain thedesired facts and return as quickly as possible. Ar-riving at San Antonio at 6 a.m. on Sunday, February16,1879, he found that he must return at 11 a.m. on thefollowing day or wait a month for the next steamer.His mission would be a failure unless he reached Lon-don before the case of the bondholders came to trialand no long stay was possible. The railway men at headquarters made profuseprotestations of a desire to assist him. They offeredto take him over the whole work, completed or inprogress, to go with him anywhere and to show himanything, even though his investigations should requirea trip to Bolivia. On the way muchvaluable information was given him about the savageswho inhabited the country and many were the bloodcurdling tales of their atrocities related to satisfy hisinquisitive mind.
