Summary[edit]

Description
English:
Receptacle for the holy oils at Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Monterey, ca.1907
Photograph of the receptacle for the holy oils used in the sacrament of extreme unction at Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Monterey, ca.1907. One of the two receptacles, each of which sits on a curved branch extending from the central post of the cross, is the container for the holy oil, while the other is for cotton on which the priest wipes his finger after dipping his finger in oil used in the consecration. The lower rectangular box-like portion would contain used cotton. The receptacel is displayed before a neutral cloth backdrop. Photoprint reads: "Used in administration of extreme unction. Oil is consecrated on Thursday preceeding Easter. In administering Extreme unction, the dipped finger makes the sign of the cross at the feet absolving the feet that may have walked in evil ways; at the mouth, absolving from uttering wicket words; at the eyes for seeing evil; at the ears for hearing evil, etc.".
