The passenger coaches in service on the Pennsylva-nia Railroad now combine in their design, construction and finish everyaim of their builders With so fair a record for material development,there is little wonder that the promotion of passenger traflSo should playso conspicuous a part in the Pennsylvania Railroads management. Noother railway has devoted such close attention to this special branch of thebusiness, and the result of years of persistent effort and conscientiousendeavor is the finest passenger service in the world. While all the trains,local as well as through, are kept up to the high standard which has beenset for them, the most notable exemplification of absolute superiority isfound in that paragon of all trains the Pennsylvania Limited. When in the year 1881 the New York & Chicago Limited of the Penn-sylvania Railroad was added to the service of that line, the act was viewed

Sixty miles an hour.—The Cereal Limited. premiums for the best-kept sections has inspired a rivalry among thetrackmen which has contributed largely to the universally acknowledgedfact that the road-bed of the Pennsylvania Railroad is the best to be foundoutside of England. In every other field, also, the improvements of modern science werebeing utilized. Every invention emanating from the brain of geniuswhich held out any promise of usefulness was tested, and, it found wor-thy, applied to practical use. The block signal system, which is the mostvalued agency in guarding the security of the traveler, was first intro-duced on the Pennsylvania, and gradually extended until it now pro-tects every mile of its main line. With the block signals came theautomatic switches, which have to-day reached a marvelous state ofdevelopment. The track tank, whereby locomotives are enabled to takeup a supply of water without materially reducing speed, was first introduced into permanent use on this lin
