But the boom of 1855 and 1856 brought with it an improvementin the class of business blocks, and brick and even stone fronts becamecommon during those years. Fire-proof construction, however, was notthought of, the first attempt in that direction being the Tribune building,erected in 1S69. This was a four-story structure of stone, with iron-frontframes and roof, having iron shutters, and it was considered at that timeabsolutely fire-proof. The office district at the time of the fire was bounded by State, Lake,La Salle and Monroe streets. In this district were to be found the princi-pal buildings of the city.
