or stone, wood being almost exclusively used for buildingpurposes. But the boom of 1855 and 1856 brought with it an improvementin the class of business blocks, and brick and even stone fronts becamecommon during those years. Fire-proof construction, however, was notthought of, the first attempt in that direction being the Tribune building,erected in 1S69. This was a four-story structure of stone, with iron-frontframes and roof, having iron shutters, and it was considered at that timeabsolutely fire-proof. The office district at the time of the fire was bounded by State, Lake,La Salle and Monroe streets. In this district were to be found the princi-pal buildings of the city.
