| Description | Reading Abbey (Benedictine), 30 June 2018. Built in 1120, dissolved in 1538 and the Abbot Hugh Cook of Faringdon was hung, drawn and quartered for treason in front of the Abbey Church in 1539. Although much of the stone was taken for building elsewhere in the town, the substantial remains were used as a defensive position by both the Parliamentarians and Royalists and after the end of the Civil War the Abbey was reduced to ruins to prevent it being used as a fortification again. |
