Summary
[edit]DescriptionRainwater collector - geograph.org.uk - 1469652.jpg |
English: Rainwater collector. This traditional rainwater collector shows the original style of construction with long, slim stones angled into the prevailing wind so that rain is harvested to run off into the lower collecting trough. It is a great shame to see such ingenious structures disused, as they would have been of great importance when livestock was more common. A modernised example can be seen near to the northern coast 1469357.
Another feature of this image is the way that the limestone pavement has been lifted to make better pasture, leaving horizontal strata displayed below the dry wall at the boundary. The nearer wall is probably a windbreak since it does not enclose anything. |
