On the locomotive haulingan important passenger train the air ap-paratus opening the fire-box doors be-came out of order, which made it possibleto pass the fuel into the fire-box throughone of the doors only, rendering it impos-sible to use the shovel. By the ingenuity of firemen and en-gineer the locomotive was fired by handin this way and the train arrived onschedule time at the terminal, enablingthe division to retain a perfect record. This is as it should be. and we trustthat the kindly relations thus briefly re-ferred to will not only long exist, but thatthey will become an example to others,proving that the interests of all engaged means that a large amount of rollingstock must be purchased within the nextyear or two. The Government railwayshave been unable to handle the rapidly-growing business owing to a shortage ofcars and motive power. Since 1906 thetonnage handled has almost doubled.
