This sli^pccarries the sheet in for a distance of 4 in.,wlien it turns up straight again and isbrought out flush with the outside, whereit is reinforced by a 4 in. by 4 in. an!!leriveted between the horizontal portion. stresses that would otherwise be imposedby the clamps of and handling in thedumping machines. The construction of the sides of the caris clearly shown by the cross sections onthe lines A C, D E and F G. The section at ^ C is taken, as indi-cated on the full length plan of the car,at a point near the end of the center sec-tion, where the depth of the side plates isthe greatest. This, at first glance, maynot appear to be so, because the uprightportion of the section is broken in theengraving, for which an allowance shouldbe made in studying it. Tliis section shows the side sheets to beriiade of % in. plate, bent and braced atthe top, as already described, and rivetted 182 RAILWAY AND LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERIXG July, 1921

There also appears an insidestake made of a 5 in. rolled bulb anglewhich is rivetted to the side sheet, andbent at the top to conform to the angleof the sheet, which is 15°. The bent partis cut off flush with the line of the straightpart of the head or bulb. This brings theinside line of the stake nearly flush withthe inside face of the offset portion of theside sheet. At the bottom the floor is rivetted to the top of the flanges of the bottom sideangle and to a similar angle riveted to the bottom of the center sills. It is stif-fened by a cross bearer made of a 5 in.bulb angle, which lies on top of the floorand is riveted, with it, to the angle atthe bottom of the center sill. At the outside the two bulb angles areconnected by the gusset a and, at the innerend, a similar gusset stiffens the connec-tion between the cross bearer and thecenter sill. The center sills are made of 13 in.channels o
