[edit]DescriptionRadio on the Water montage - Wireless Age October 1922 p 24.jpg |
English: Pictures of people listening to radios on the water, from a 1922 magazine. In 1922, AM radio broadcasting was just getting started, and radio listening was a hugely popular high-tech novelty, particularly among young people, part of the "Roaring 20s" lifestyle. The early vacuum tube radio receivers were heavy, cumbersome, and difficult to tune, ran off heavy lead-acid auto batteries, and required elaborate external antennas, but this did not stop people from taking them to the beach. (upper left) Beach dance party, 40 years before Annette Funicello. (upper right) Probably a publicity stunt, a lady taking a radio with her floating on a buoy. (lower) A father and son fishing, with a radio along in the canoe to pass the time. Early vacuum tubes could not produce much power so many early radios did not have loudspeakers and had to be listened to with earphones. |
