e dullperiod in the circuit. On some circuits, urgent mes-sages are accepted which take priority over all others, andrequire the payment of a considerably increased rate. Asa general rule, the minimum number of classes of mes-sages required to maintain an acceptable load factor isdesirable not only because of the increased routine inhandling traffic of many different classes but also becauseof the confusion in the public mind and the possible dis-satisfaction which results when the type of service renderedin any given case is not clearly understood in advance. The huge radio stations for inter-continental work areinteresting studies. One of these stations is the RadioCentral, located at Rocky Point, Long Island, some 70miles east of New York City. However, the actual opera-tion of this station takes place from New York City, thedots and dashes being formed by an operator in NewYork City and sent over telegraph lines to the RadioCentral station, where they are automatically transferred

268 RADIO FOR EVERYBODY to the powerful radio transmitter, consisting of a num-ber of 200-kilowatt high-frequency generators. RadioCentral is in realty several stations in one. It comprisesa number of separate transmitters so as to ensure simul-taneous communication with a number of stations abroad. Operating a Trans-Atlantic Station at a Distance It has always been a problem to control several hun-dred kilowatts of power at frequencies of 20,000 cycles persecond by breaking it up into the dots and dashes of thetelegraph code at speeds as high as 100 words per minuteor more. When it is considered that this is equivalentto starting and stopping the flow of power fifty timesper second, accurately and faultlessly, and that the initialcontrol power is merely the few watts that can be drawnfrom the terminals of a telegraph line, the magnitude ofthe problem becomes evident. By the development ofhigh-speed power relays and the new magnetic amplifier, the problem has been very elegantly solved
