DescriptionRacetrack Playa, Death Valley National Park (13153747894).jpg | Lots of theories as to how these toaster-sized rocks move across this dry lakebed. The one that makes most sense to me is when the lakebed surface becomes viscous after a rain and then a sustained episodic wind event happens moving the rocks along. One reason I think the wind events are episodic is that a number of the trails zig-zag, meaning there was a sustained wind from that direction and then the next event was from a different direction. These lines are straight with no deviation until a change in direction reflected by an angle in the trail... |
