Italiano: MASCHERA CIMIERO ABUA - Maschera antropozoomorfa, fissata a una calotta e calzata orizzontalmente. Nella parte anteriore il muso appuntito di un pesce; al centro un volto antropomorfo in rilievo fortemente geometrizzato (i parallelepipedi del volto e della bocca, le forme cilindriche degli occhi); nella parte posteriore pinna caudale e quattro pinne dorsali.
Queste maschere vengono indossate dai membri della società delle maschere Ekine, che le portano sulla testa in orizzontale. Incarnano spiriti delle acque nelle forme dello squalo, del delfino, del pesce sega ecc., oppure assemblano caratteristiche di animali distinti come pesci e coccodrilli. Mentre gli spiriti della foresta dalla pelle scura sono generalmente visti come brutti e pericolosi, gli spiriti delle acque, dalla pelle chiara, sono invece ritenuti belli e benevoli anche se talora possono manifestarsi in maniera distruttiva scatenando tempeste. Per quanto queste credenze siano precedenti l'arrivo degli europei, si è poi realizzata una stretta associazione fra bianchi e spiriti delle acque, entrambi provenienti dal mare e portatori di ricchezze. |
