New York City 41 IXCREASE IX MOTOR VEHICLES (b) Operation of 2nd Ave. L trains on upper level inaugurated Julv 23,1917.The increase in the number of motor driven vehicles as compared with horsedrawn is particularly interesting. In 1913, there were 1899 horse drawn (25%)and 4792 motor driven (75%) or a total of 6691 vehicles crossing the bridgein 24 hours. In 1919 the number of horse drawn had decreased to 1207 (7%)and the motor driven had increased to 17,594 (93%) or a total of 18.801. Alarge part of this increase is due to the many new automobile manufacturingplants and service stations which have located in Queens Borough during
