Summary[edit]

Description

Pyrenula mamillana (Ach.) Trevisan

Image location: Chica, Chame District, Panama Province, Panama

It is allegedly common. Here’s a photo. Looks plausible. Of course, so do dozens of others, I’m sure! It is supposed to have a “heavily inspersed” hymenium, naked shiny perithecia (as the photos show), spores 15.5-21 × 5.5-8 µm, and perithecia 0.7-1.5 mm across (“flattened conical”). [Details from Harris’s “More Florida Lichens”.]

The TICOLICHEN paper also covers Pyrenula. It agrees: if inspersed, it should be P. mamillana, if not, it keys to P. dermatodes, but the perithecia are almost hidden in the accompanying figure. So it must be P. mamillana.

PS. I was wrong about the spore color. You must have an immature spore. They should turn gray-brown when mature. I make that mistake all the time. Sorry!
