Pvt. Thomas K. Rogers (CP 1187), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Thomas K. Rogers, Company C, 5th Alabama Infantry, who received a sabre wound to his head at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia on April 2nd, 1865. The skull was trephinated and some bone removed as treatment. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Sabre cut, fracturing skull. Pvt T.K. Rogers Co. C. 5th Ala.” History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 2, 1865. Ward 16, Bed 56,--Name, Thomas K. Rogers, Private Co. C. 5th Alabama Infantry—aged 41. Admitted to this Hospital April 8, 1865, with a sabre cut, received near Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1865, fracturing frontal bone over left supra-orbital ridge fissure extending backwards two inches. April 20, 1865, patient showing symptoms of compression. Trephine was applied about one inch above supra-orbital ridge, and depressed bone elevated. May 27, 1865, recovering rapidly. Has had no bad symptoms since the removal of bone the large incision in integument cicatrizing nicely, and covering dura-mater so that pulsation is no longer visible.
