Description

Pvt. George Garrison (CP 1005), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private George Garrison, Company A, 95th New York volunteers, shows the gunshot wound he sustained to his hip and abdomen on June 18th, 1864, at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia. Caption reads: “Penetrating g.s.wnd. of abdomen, fracturing crest of ilium. Pvt. Geo. Garrison Co. A. 95th N.Y.”

History is on reverse: “George Garrison. Gunshot wound of hip and abdomen. Gangrene. Recovery. George Garrison, private, Co. A, 95th N.Y. Vols., was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, May 7th, 1865, convalescent from gunshot wound of left hip and abdomen. Wounded by a Minnie ball before Petersburgh, Va., June 18th, 1864, the ball entered the umbilical region of abdomen, making its exit from left lumbar region fracturing crest of left ilium in its course. The exit of wound was followed by gangrene, causing contraction and adhesion of muscles to crest of ilium. Discharged, June 22nd, 1865, wounds entirely healed.”
