Shot Fracture Middle Third of Thigh. Recovery. Private Charles Foster, Co. D, 3d Cavalry, was wounded in a fight with the ‘Indians’ at Slim Buttes, Dakota, September 9, 1876, by a conoidal ball, which fractured the right thigh in the middle third. The ball was removed from the back of the hand by Surgeon A. Kartsuff. By October 4th the external wounds had entirely healed and union of bone was reported to have taken plance. The patient was transferred to the post hospital at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, November 22, 1876, and discharged on Surgeon’s certificate of disability, March 19, 1877.” Date: circa 1876 Photo ID: SP 360 Source Collection: OHA 82: Surgical Photographs Repository: National Museum of Health and Medicine, Otis Historical Archives Rights: No known restrictions upon publication, physical copy retained by National Museum of Health and Medicine.
