History is on reverse: "Army Medical Museum, Washington. Photograph No. 360. Shot Fracture Middle Third of Thigh. Recovery. Private Charles Foster, Co. D, 3d Cavalry, was wounded in a fight with the ‘Indians’ at Slim Buttes, Dakota, September 9, 1876, by a conoidal ball, which fractured the right thigh in the middle third. He also received a wound of the left hand, the missile lodging. Surgeon B.A. Clements, U.S. Army, removed a number of fragments of bone and applied a plaster splint from the trochanters to the ankle. The patient was transported on a mule litter to Crook City, a distance of 90 miles, over a broken country, without experiencing any pain or notable disturbance. On September 13th the splint was partly removed and readjusted. The external wounds were granulating, and there was scarcely any discharge of pus. The ball was removed from the back of the hand by Surgeon A. Kartsuff. By October 4th the external wounds had entirely healed and union of bone was reported to have taken plance. The patient was transferred to the post hospital at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, November 22, 1876, and discharged on Surgeon’s certificate of disability, March 19, 1877.”
