| Description |
purple cushion buckwheat, Eriogonum ovalifolium var. purpureum, Nevada, White Mountains, Sugarloaf, Queen Valley - Owens Valley drainage, elevation 2701 m (8860 ft). This was an odd population of purple cushion buckwheat (the nearest thing it would key out to), with the strong brownish coloration of the flowers and leaves nearly matching the brownish decomposing andesitic soil that it was growing on. The species is widespread at middle elevations in the mountains and foothills of western North America, with this variety reaching up to about 3100 meters (10200 feet) elevations. The odd coloration could also have been a response to the relatively high elevation of this population. |
