Description |
English: Operated as part of the famed "Mosquito Fleet" of the Puget Sound, and later for Washington State Ferries, for six decades . In 1906, Joshua Green negotiated the purchase of the CHIPPEWA, then serving on the Great Lakes, for the Puget Sound Navigation Co. It served the Seattle-Victoria route. In March of 1908, the CHIPPEWA collided with and sunk the sailing schooner LYDIA, killing two. By 1910. the vessel had been placed on the Bellingham-Seattle route. In 1911 the vessel was placed on the Seattle-Tacoma route. In 1917, the CHIPPEWA was used by the U.S. Shipping Board as a training vessel for junior deck officers and returned to the Puget Sound Navigation Co. after WWI in 1920. The CHIPPEWA was rebuilt in 1926 with open ends and the capacity for 90 automobiles, as well as 2,000 passengers. She retained her original steam powerplant. In 1932, the vessel was completely rebuilt with a diesel engine at a total cost of $200,000. Condemned following Coast Guard inspection in 1964. Purchased by Foss Launch & Tug Co. as a floating warehouse.(SOURCE: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest." Seattle: The Superior Company, 1966.)
