CITY COUNTY STATE A Combination of MUNICIPAL JOURNAL and CONTRACTING Vol. 52 March 11, 1922 No. 10 Constructing Conners Creek Sewer Mechanical equipment installed for building 7,770 feet of 221/2 x 55-foottriple conduit in open trench, using dragline excavator, steam shovel, indus-trial track and trains, locomotives, concrete mixer plant, and collapsible steelforms, with 375 men. An important element of the $35,000,000 sewersystem now under construction in Detroit is theConners Creek Sewer, about 7 miles long, for which7,770 feet of 22^^ x 55-foot sewer in sections 1 and2 is now being built by the Gillespie Contracting Co.,New York, for a contract price of $2,190,850. The contractor, with a force of about 375 men, is nowmaking a progress of about 40 feet daily. This sewer, which is claimed to be the largest everbuilt, has an outside rectangular cross section 55feet, 1 inch in width and 22 feet, 6 inches in height,containing three parallel rectangular barrels 15 feet,

SET READY FOR CONCRETING. 173 174 PUBLIC WORKS Vol. 52, No. 10 9 inches inside width and 17 feet, 6 inches insideheight, with flat roof, vertical walls, rounded uppercorners, and invert concaved on the upper surface toa radius of 16 feet, 6 inches. The thickness of theinvert at the center and of the flat roof slab is 22inches, that of the exterior walls is 23 inches and ofthe partition walls is 16 inches. The roof and invertare reinforced by transverse bars and, with thevertical walls, are also reinforced by longitudinal Yzand %-inch bars, all of them placed at least 3 inchesfrom the surface of the 1:2:4 concrete. All ofthe 1.970 pounds of reinforcement per linear foot ismade of square bars and the shear bars are bentto 45 degree angles. About 14 yards of concrete perlinear foot is required. EXCAVATION This section of the sewer is built in an open trenchinvolving 250,000 or more yards of excavation inblue clay, which is made chiefly by steam shovelsopera
