Lane, chief of the Manchester fire departinent.The fire was one of the most disastrous in the historyof the city and was particularly hard to handle becauseof the very great dangers from explosives, stored in thebuilding. Nineteen firemen were more or less injured fromfiring glass and falling bricks blown out by explosion.^.Many brave acts were performed by the firemen, score>of them standing over a veritable keg of powder fightin;,;the flames for hours. Policemen and firemen carried acase of powder from the burning building down a ladder.Ior many minutes the firemen withstood a fusilade ofbullets which fairly rained about them with the explodedshells when the fire reached that portion of the storewhere several thousand rounds of ammunition were stored.The presence of a new gasoline pumping motor propelledfire engine made by the Fore River Ship Co. of Quincy,Mass., in the city where it was to have given a demon-stration, was most fortunate for the citizens of Manches-
