SMAXXPOX 167 SMALLPOX All cases to be reported.—All cases of smallpox mustbe reported as soon as discovered by tbe attending physi-cian to the local health officer or board of health, -who,in turn, should notify the State Department of Healthwithin twenty-four hours. Blanks are provided by theDepartment for the making of these reports. Characteristics of smallpox.— It is highly contagiousVery few escape taking it on exposure unless they havehad either smallpox or vaccina. While it is early con-tagious, it is most contagious after the eruption appearsand continues contagious until the skin is clear. It is contracted only by exposure to emanations fromthe bodies of ipersons sick with the disease, or to articleswhich have become infected from them. Bad sanitationalone never can cause it. The vitality of its virus is great. Infected articlesif kept from dampness and high temperature may spreadthe disease long after the original outbreak.
