rooms in the High School building, two roomsin Germania Hall for Germans, two rooms in the old Fair StreetSchool building, and two rooms on Wallace Street for Italians;one room in each of the Jewish Synagogues on Temple andFactory streets, for Russians; in St. Louis Church, Chapelstreet, for French, and in two rooms in the Woolsey Schoolbuilding, Fair Haven. In these schools there were pupils fromthirteen to forty-five years of age. Those who could speakEnglish were well arranged in classes and, for the most part,instructed in the common branches taught in the public dayschools. I heard one small class reciting Latin. Some wereinstructed in mechanical drawing. In the schools where weregathered those who could not speak English, the efforts of theteachers seemed to be to teach them to speak and read English.All the teachers of these classes spoke the languages of thelearners as well as English, and the methods pursued seemedto be much the same as those used in teaching English-speaking
