Summary[edit]

Description

Pseudosarcosoma latahense (Paden & Tylutki) M. Carbone, Agnello & P. Alvarado

Image location: Stevens Creek County Park, Santa Clara Co., California, USA

Found in two places, one along Stevens Canyon Road, the other along Redwood Gulch Road. It appeared quite common. I saw about 30 fruitbodies, all growing on wood sticks on the ground, either solo or in small groups. The largest were about 6 cm across (shown in the first photo).

There seem to be only three dark gelatinous species found on the West Coast USA: Urnula padeniana, Urnula mexicana, and Pseudosarcosoma latahense. My microscopy is not complete, but based on the relatively small size and non-guttulate mature spores, I bet the third name is most likely.
