Presumably Mendelssohn intended it as apurely musical reflection of the scene in Quinces house—the firstmeeting to discuss the play to be given by the workmen at thewedding—with which the first act ends. Indeed there is a passingallusion to Nick Bottoms bray in it. But the general characterof the music is light and fairy-like, with nothing of the grotesqueabout it. The scherzo presents an elaborate development of twothemes that are not sharply contrasted. The first theme has asubsidiary.
