The Blessed Damozel (La Damoisellb ^lue), Lyric Poem AFTER D. Gr. ROSSETTI,. FOR FeMALE VoICES, SoLO, ChORUS, AND Orchestra Claude Debussy (Bom at St. Germain (Seine and Oise), August 22, 1862; died at Paris, March 26, 1918.) Rossettis poem, which was in his mind as early as 1848, waspublished in a short-lived magazine, The Germ (afterwards Art andPoetry), brought out early in 1850 by members of the Prseraphaelitebrotherhood with the aid of some friends. In this magazine Ros-settis first verses and prose were published. In 1881 he told HallGaine that the origin of The Blessed Damozel was derived from hisperusal and admiration of Poes Raven. I saw (Mr. Cainethus voiced Rossetti) that Poe had done the utmost it waspossible to do with the grief of the lover on earth, and I determinedto reverse the conditions and give utterance to the yearning of theloved one in heaven.
