l lay in the same nest. To preventthis, a nest in which a turkey has commenced to lay is,after she has deposited her egg, shut up for the remainderof the day, to keep out intruders. When the crows eateggs laid in the nests that are far from the house, theyare frightened away by strings stretched across near thenest. Glass nest eggs are used. Eggs are gathereddaily, to prevent their being chilled, and that rats maynot get them. They are kept in pans, having a few oatsin the bottom to prevent their rolling about. Each pan-ful holds two sittings, and is dated, that their age maybe known. When a hen stays on the iiest for two nights, seventeen of the oldest eggs are given her ; the eggs laidby her during the two days are not left in the nest. Thenests are first shaped, so that they will not be so flat asto allow the eggs to roll out, or so deep as to cause themto be piled one upon another. The turkeys seem to dobetter if not fed while sitting. Those occupying nesta TUKKEYS ON THE FAKM. 313
