Title
Probably Roman: Ear scoop and Nail Cleaner
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy ear scoop or nail cleaner, of probable Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 410 AD).

The ear scoop is sub rectangular in plan, with a circular section in the centre of the shank. One end of the ear scoop is incomplete and consists of a forked end. The other end has an oval shaped concave end.

The ear scoop measures 74.55 mm in length, 4.85 mm wide and 5.10 mm thick. It weighs 3.4 g.

The ear scoop is a mid to dark brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Ear scoops / nail cleaners of this type are typically considered to be Roman in dating, but this style of cosmetic article continues in use until the Post Medieval period.
